Standard 1:

Educators value the success of all students. Educators care for students and act in their best interests.

In this unit plan inclusion explainer group assignment, we show our dedication to the care for students and having their best interests in our minds.

Standard 2:

Educators act ethically and maintain the integrity, credibility, and reputation of the profession.

In the workshop “Social Media and the lay of the land for educators” presented by The White Hatter, we learned about ethical use of social media, privacy concerns, and the impact of online behavior, both for ourselves and our students. By understanding the appropriate ways to navigate social media, we can now model ethical digital citizenship and responsible online conduct, aligning with the values of honesty, professionalism, and integrity,

Standard 3:

Educators understand and apply knowledge of student growth and development.

Throughout the program we developed a strong understanding of cognitive, social, emotional and physical developmental stages, which informed my ability to create inclusive and engaging lessons. I learned to design developmentally appropriate classroom management strategies that fostered positive behaviour and collaboration, while lesson planning emphasized differentiation and UDL to meet the diverse needs of students. The importance of assessments became clear as I used them not only to measure student progress but also to guide and adapt my teaching practices. My practicum provided many opportunities to observe student development first hand and apply this knowledge in real-world classrooms, reflecting on my practices to improve outcomes for all learners.

Standard 4:

Educators value the involvement and support of parents, guardians, families, and communities in schools.

In my first practicum i got to help host my first open house/parent teacher meetings. I helped Mrs. O’Neill set up the classroom with some of the work we had been working on during my time with the students and before I was there. To be part of this night was an excellent opportunity to meet, connect and introduce myself to the parents and guardians of the students I had been teaching. The parents and guardians were very encouraging and open to me being there. I had the opportunity to be part of the discussions about their child’s life at school, their child’s strengths and areas that could use improvement. It was a great night and felt good to be part of it.

Standard 5:

Educators implement effective planning, instruction, assessment, and reporting practices to create respectful, inclusive environments for student learning and development.

This group unit plan on the solar system, is an example of standard 5. We did this by intentionally planning and assessing with inclusivity and respect. The unit creates a learning experience that meets the diverse needs of students.

Standard 6:

Educators demonstrate a broad knowledge base and an understanding of areas they teach.

In this integrated unit plan “Drum from the heart” we effectively show our knowledge, drawing from multiple disciplines, demonstrating a broad understanding of both the content and how to create meaningful, interdisciplinary connections.

Standard 7:

Educators engage in professional learning.

In block 3 2024, I participated in two 3 hour professional development hours in literacy and mathematics. Participating in these webinars/podcast aligns with standard 7 of the British Columbia teachers standards. The webinars/podcast provided me with the opportunity to deepen my knowledge and understanding of what we have been learning in each course this semesters. I found both 3 hour session to be very useful. By engaging in these professional learning opportunities I feel I can better support students achievements and continue to learn how to adapt to diverse learning needs. I also feel I have better prepared myself as a teacher candidate for literacy and mathematics. I look forward to continue with professional development opportunities in the future for both personal growth and the advancement of the educational community.

Standard 8:

Educators contribute to the profession.

During my time in the education program, I actively contributed to the profession by creating and sharing resources with my fellow classmates. Our cohort was so good at collaboration and helping each other. For example, we developed lesson plans and teaching tools, such as interactive activities, differentiated strategies and shared them with each other to support collaborative learning and professional growth. In addition, during my practicum, I stayed after school to help run a program, for students in the after school program. I enjoyed this, I ran the sports activities in the gym, and it helped further contributing to the school community and gaining valuable experiences in building relationships and fostering student engagement outside the classroom. The experiences allowed me to support both my classmates and students, demonstrating my commitment to the teaching profession.

Standard 9:

Educator’s respect and value the history of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada and the impact of the past on the present and the future. Educators contribute towards truth, reconciliation, and healing. Educators foster a deeper understanding of ways of knowing and being, histories and cultures of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.
